NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY

In 2023 I had the privilege of directing Matilda for The Dolphin Show, America’s largest student-produced musical. When selecting Matilda, I wanted to find a show which not only resonated with college students, but would engage our broader Evanston community of children and adults of all ages. While presumably odd that I would choose a production that calls for children and instead cast entirely 18-22-year-olds, this show deeply resonated with the hearts of our team and our community. While college students, we are still seeking family, friends, and mentors who make us feel heard, seen, and valued amidst the chaos of the world. Also, what better way to saturate a show with fun than by having the opportunity to play children, and thus the most earnest and imaginative parts of ourselves.

For the first time, in this production, The Dolphin Show utilized circus and aerial elements, including three silks and a lyra. In collaboration with Sylvia Hernandez DiStasi from the Actor’s Gym, we successfully implemented circus elements, highlighting the imagination of Matilda’s mind and stories. It was incredibly special for this process to serve as an educational experience for many as it was their first time engaging with circus elements, thus many of the magical moments were devised and abstracted.

Video from the production may be provided upon request.
